About Us
As Türkiye's largest investment in fundamental science, we are an advanced research infrastructure
founded in partnership between Atatürk University and TÜBİTAK, forming the country's space sciences ecosystem.
Türkiye National Observatories was established as our country's largest investment in fundamental science under Law No. 6550 on “Supporting Research Infrastructures”; it received its qualification on “25 April 2023” with the status of “Advanced Research Infrastructure” in partnership between Atatürk University and TÜBİTAK, with a new structure that will form the space sciences ecosystem. It is also the first “Joint Research Infrastructure” under Law No. 6550, which will further contribute to and serve studies in the field of space sciences in our country, and will bring a new dimension to its strong infrastructures by supporting them with up-to-date technologies. The core infrastructures of this strong partnership are the “Eastern Anatolia Observatory” (DAG), whose installation within the “Atatürk University Astrophysics Research and Application Center” (ATASAM) was completed in 2024 and which will be inaugurated in 2025, and the “TÜBİTAK National Observatory” (TUG), which has been serving nationwide for many years.
As an advanced research center with its headquarters in Erzurum and a support office in Antalya, Türkiye National Observatories — particularly in space sciences, through the “Eastern Anatolia Observatory” (DAG) in Erzurum and the “TÜBİTAK National Observatory” (TUG) in Antalya — constitutes our country's largest and most comprehensive research infrastructures for astronomical observations. In addition, with the “Optomechatronics Research Laboratory” (OPAL) infrastructure planned to be established in Erzurum, momentum will soon be given to qualified and competitive work through R&D activities and products in optical technologies and focal plane instruments.
With the vision of being a globally innovative, competitive and pioneering research infrastructure in space sciences and in optical science and technologies, Türkiye National Observatories aims to carry out astronomical observation services, space situational awareness observations and scientific research activities on space weather, to organize science–society events, and to develop the large-scale optical systems our country needs through R&D activities in optical science and technologies.
With its strong infrastructures, Türkiye National Observatories will continue its services for many years as a research infrastructure that competes internationally and is preferred, offering the opportunity to work on current topics in the world's space science research with new optical technologies and focal plane instruments to be developed in-house.
